How much does an AFL player agent cost?

What AFL agents charge, and what you should get for it.

AFL player agent fees are not set or capped by the AFL Players’ Association, so they are negotiated between the player and the agent. In practice, agents usually charge between 2% and 5% of a player’s football payments, and typically charge nothing in a player’s first season or while they are on a rookie contract.

How the fee works

The fee is normally a percentage of football payments rather than a flat cost, so it scales with what the player earns. Because it is negotiated, the rate and exactly what it covers are worth agreeing clearly and in writing before you sign.

What you should get for it

  • Contract negotiation and review, so the terms work in your favour
  • Management of club, sponsor and stakeholder relationships
  • Commercial and brand opportunities, chosen and structured well
  • Career strategy and planning for life beyond playing

Clarify before you sign

Ask what the fee is, when it starts, what services it includes, and who will actually do the work. A good agent will put it in plain terms. At G2G, because Jamo is also a qualified business lawyer, the agreement itself gets the same careful read as any contract.

Questions

Common questions.

Do you pay an AFL agent in your first year?

Usually not. Agents typically do not charge a fee during a player’s first season or while they are on a rookie contract, though terms are negotiated individually.

What percentage do AFL agents charge?

The AFLPA does not cap fees. From a player’s second year on a list, usual agent fees range from about 2% to 5% of the football payments the player earns. Source: AFL Players’ Association.

Are agent fees negotiable?

Yes. Because the AFLPA does not fix a rate, the fee and the services it covers are negotiated between the player and the agent, so treat the quoted rate as a starting point.
